4 out of 5 stars Fun And Informative   November 1, 2009
JoJo (Michigan)
I am an Operating Room nurse, who had Roux n Y surgery 10 years ago (before the laparoscopic technique was perfected.) I experienced many of the side effects and complications described in this book. When I had my surgery, there were very few written resources, both pre-op and post-op, and many of the patients went into the process with little knowledge of what they were getting themselves into. The hospital where I work is in the planning stages of our own Bariatric surgery program. I had attended a Bariatric Seminar For Healthcare Providers at the beginning of the month, and had the pleasure of hearing Julie Janeway (one of the authors) speak. I wish that there were books like this back when I was in my "Getting To Know Me" stage immediately post-op. There were no support groups in my area, so I really felt like I was totally alone. I would recommend this book to anyone considering weight loss surgery.

3 out of 5 stars A lot of information with an infomorcial   September 12, 2009
M. Hill (TN)
I think this is a good book. There is a lot of information and it covers a lot of topics that need to be discussed. The one big problem that I have with this book is it comes across as a big infomercial for the doctors who are writing it and the a food company that sells bariatric surgery products.
Would I recommend you read it, Yes. Would I recommend you buy their products, NO!

5 out of 5 stars Funny and informative   July 3, 2009
Sara L. Collins (Upstate NY)
This book is written by two women and various medical professionals. They manage to stuff the book full of everything you need to know before and what to expect after surgery. However, it does not feel like reading a medical text book. The women are caring, understanding, and funny. They have taken a real look at their lives and experiences before and after surgery. There are chapters such as "The Protein Safari" about making sure you eat enough protein and the "Make Your Own Cat Kit" about post operative hair loss. I know when I am looking down at my hand full of hair in the shower, rather than freaking out, I'll realize I've gotten my first installment of my cat kit.

5 out of 5 stars Real Skinny ion Weight Loss Surgery   February 27, 2009

This was a great down to earth book about what really happens during and after WLS. I highly recommend it for it's directness and humor!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book if you read through the typos   February 2, 2009

This is not a be-all end-all book about weight loss surgery. It does; however, give information about surgeries and the possible after effects (not that they had ALL possible effects, but they certainly had several), in a witty, informative way.

I found "The Real Skinny on Weight Loss Surgery - Second Edition" to be useful and informative.

Overall, it's a great book. But, it was highly disappointing to find so many typographical errors, which lead to questioning the professionalism and accuracy of the medical personnel who have loaned their names to this publication.

The good thing is that none of the errors change the meaning of the sentences where they are present. Sadly, the majority of the typos appear in Chapter Three - Dr. Baker's first chapter, leaving the educated doctor look like a buffoon.

There are other errors throughout the remainder of the book that appear to have been 'catchable' by a spell check (i.e. Page 237 Chapter 17 protein is spelled prtoein [sic].
